Only one race separates Brad Keselowski from his first Sprint Cup championship. Following Sunday’s race at Phoenix, Keselowski not only took over the points lead from Jimmie Johnson after the No.48 blew a right-front tire with 76 laps to go, but he also gave himself some breathing room over the five-time champion. By managing to survive the final laps with a six place finish, Keselowski holds a 20-point lead. All he needs to do to win the championship is finish 15th or better and he will deliver the first championship to car owner, Roger Penkse, in NASCAR’s top level. But, as everyone knows, there are no guarantees in racing. That was apparent as recently as Sunday at Phoenix when Jimmie Johnson crashed and finished 32nd at a track where statistics show he’s one of the best at the track. Statistics have seemingly been one of the major story lines of the Chase thus far, typically favoring the experience of Johnson over the exuberance of the new-blood Keselowski. But the fact that Joh...

That will move Keselowski, who had qualified third, to the front...

Joey Logano wins Homestead pole; Brad Keselowski grabs third starting spot

Joey Logano may have knocked Brad Keselowski off the front row in Friday's time trails at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but Keselowski nevertheless had reason to celebrate. Many would consider the 20-point cushion for Brad Keselowski enough to go ahead and crown him the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion. And with the way he’s running this year and turning in strong finishes at tracks he usually struggles at, why wouldn’t you etch his name on the trophy? He’s been clutch and running like a champion each week. All he has to do Sunday is finish 17th...

Roger Penske says Brad Keselowski has embraced leadership role

When Brad Keselowski signed on with Penske Racing, he was a follower, not a leader. Kurt Busch was the No. 1 driver in the Penske camp and remained so for Keselowski's first two seasons of full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup racing. But Busch's abrupt departure, after a vitriolic tirade against an ESPN camera crew a year ago at Homestead-Miami Speedway, left a leadership vacuum...

Possible milestones

If he should win the Sprint Cup title, Brad Keselowski would be the first Michigan native to do so. Keselowski, 28, also would be the first Cup champion born after Richard Petty won his seventh and final championship (1979) and after Dale Earnhardt Sr. won his first (1980). If Ty Dillon, 20, were to overcome a 12-point deficit to James Buescher and win the NASCAR Camping World Truck...
