Reliever Anthony Bass has cleared waivers and been granted his unconditional release from the Blue Jays.
Anthony Bass’ tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays is officially over. The 35-year-old righty, designated for assignment on June 9, cleared waivers and was released by the Blue Jays on Thursday.
The Toronto Blue Jays designated righthander Anthony Bass for assignment, as announced via Twitter. This transaction is notable because on May 29, Bass made the news for sharing a video on Instagram which promoted anti-LGBTQ+ campaigns to boycott Target and Bud Light for their Pride-themed promotions.
Beyond the poor on-field results, Anthony Bass has made plenty of headlines in recent days for other reasons.
The Astros beat the Blue Jays 9-2, putting up seven runs in the first to take a commanding lead. Bass entered the game in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on second and two outs.
It’s an unsurprising move, as that modest salary is a bargain for an effective middle-innings arm of Bass’ ilk.
A host of contracts around the league contain club options for 2023. Some of them will be easy decisions one way or the other, while there are others that’ll be more borderline calls.
Miami received prospect Jordan Groshans in return.
