Revisionist's history or the truth? Steve Spurrier denies Shockey comment in The U Part 2 movie.

SHREVEPORT, La. – And you thought The U Part 2 had some good  footage about the infamous Bourbon Street Brawl.     South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier, always a gem to interview, didn’t disappoint Friday at the press conference for the Duck Commander Independence Bowl.      Somehow, the topic of  Billy Corben’s recently released The U Part 2 movie and the...

Steve Spurrier claims Jeremy Shockey misquoted him in The U Part 2

SHREVEPORT, La. — South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier called a timeout during a press conference Friday to say he was misquoted in a popular ESPN documentary film about the Hurricanes. One of the more memorable parts of The U Part 2 involved the brawl between Miami and Spurrier’s Florida Gators days before the Jan. 2, 2001 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. In the film, former Hurricanes...

Beckham not obsessed with NFL rookie award

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Odell Beckham, Jr. says being named the league's top rookie doesn't dominate his thoughts. But it's not far away, either. ''It's always in the back of your mind,'' Beckham said. ''But right now, we've got two more games and whatever happens, happens. You can only control what you can control. ''If it were to happen, it would be quite an accomplishment...

Receptions by position, Payton-Brees era

Here’s a breakdown of the % of receptions made by players at each position, 2006-2013. Interesting to see how Payton & Brees started using tight ends a LOT more once they signed Jeremy Shockey in 2008 (Billy Miller was big in 2008, too). Also interesting how quickly they stopped forcing the ball to Reggie Bush thanks (presumably) to injury and ineffectiveness. I had fun making this one.

Saints receivers: touchdown machines and fumble monsters part 1

Following up on yesterday’s post, I thought it’d be interesting to look at touchdown and fumble rates for Saints receivers. So here’s a graph plotting the two for receivers with at least 100 receptions as a Saint. Note that I didn’t include RBs because Pro Football Reference doesn’t specify whether a running back’s fumbles come from a reception or a carry (which...

Eric Ebron and Jeremy Shockey: Striking Similarities

Jeremy Shockey was drafted 14th overall by the New York Giants in 2002. Since his selection, the Giants have not drafted a tight end in the first round. That may change this year. With the 12th selection in the 2014 draft, the Giants may draft a Tight End from North Carolina that goes by the name of Eric Ebron. Interestingly, they're not so different when you look at each athlete...

Jeremy Shockey clinging to football life

Jeremy Shockey – known mostly for thinking he was better than he actually was – is still holding out hope that some misguided franchise has an opening for a self-centered, over-the-hill tight end. Shockey was a beast at the University of Miami, leading the team with 45 receptions and 604 yards receiving and eight touchdowns in 2001. He was also a Mackey award finalist, second...

Best tight end selection in New York Giants draft history

The New York Giants have historically drafted very few tight ends. For instance, the front office has drafted more quarterbacks than tight ends in the past decade. But when they do, they make a pretty good pick. The best Giant tight end in recent memory is the four-time Pro Bowler Jeremy Shockey. But when it comes down to the best tight end in Giants history, the award has to...
