NFL players primed to bounce back this season

Consistency is tough for NFL players, with so many injuries and a game truly dependent on the full team. Here are 25 players primed for bounce-back seasons after disappointing in 2017.

Odell Beckham Jr., WR, New York Giants
Danielle Parhizkaran / USA Today Sports Images

Beckham played only four games last season due to injury and will be playing for a new contract in his fifth season. He had more than 1,300 yards receiving in each of his first three seasons, and the Giants offensive line improvements should give him more time to get down the field.

Eric Berry, S, Kansas City Chiefs

Berry dominated in Week 1 vs. the Patriots before tearing his Achilles. He returns after plenty of time to get healthy, and the Chiefs will be counting on him after trading Marcus Peters in the offseason.

Derek Carr, QB, Oakland Raiders

Carr regressed last season, going 6-9 as a starter and more than doubling his interception total from 2016. The Raiders hired Jon Gruden to fix him and the rest of the Raiders offense, and Carr is just entering his age 27 season.

Chris Carson, RB, Seattle Seahawks

Carson took hold of the starting running back job early last season before a nasty leg injury ended his year prematurely. While on the field, he flashed great ability, including a 93-yard game vs. San Francisco. He's set to be in more of a complementary role after the Seahawks drafted Rashaad Penny, but he should see plenty of work in his second year.

Dalvin Cook, RB, Minnesota Vikings

Cook helped Vikings fans forget about Adrian Peterson early in his rookie campaign, averaging 4.8 yards per carry, but he injured his knee in his fourth game. The Minnesota offense looks even more exciting this year after acquiring Kirk Cousins, but Cook should still see plenty of carries.

Quincy Enunwa, WR, New York Jets

A big, sure-handed receiver, Enunwa missed all of last season due to injury after becoming a top wideout for the Jets in 2016 with 857 yards receiving. The start of his season could be delayed due to a thumb injury, but Enunwa should find the field soon and is a potential building block along with Jets first-round pick, Sam Darnold.

Pierre Garcon, WR, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco's offense broke out late in the year with Jimmy Garoppolo, and Garcon wasn't even a part of it after getting hurt halfway through the season. The veteran wideout still had 500 yards receiving in five games, and he should see plenty of work now that he's healthy again.

A Pro Bowl-caliber left tackle in six seasons with Buffalo, Glenn played only six games last year due to injury. The Bengals expect him to step in to protect Andy Dalton's blindside this year, and he should boost a team that's really struggled in protection.

Justin Houston, OLB, Kansas City Chiefs

Houston returned from a torn ACL to make 9.5 sacks last season, but he claims that he was still feeling the impact of knee surgery he had after the 2015 season. He led the league with 22 sacks in 2014 and believes he can get back to that level now that he's fully healthy.

Allen Hurns, WR, Dallas Cowboys

Hurns reached 1,000 yards receiving with the Jaguars in 2015, but he's struggled to stay on the field over the last two seasons. After signing with the Cowboys, he's become their clear No. 1 receiving option this year. With Dez Bryant and Jason Witten gone, Hurns could put up big numbers with his new team.

Sebastian Janikowski, K, Seattle Seahawks

Janikowski was injured and eventually cut by the Raiders last year after 17 years of service. He goes north to Seattle this season, and the change should do him some good after effectively kicking on a baseball diamond for his entire year at the Coliseum in Oakland.

David Johnson, RB, Arizona Cardinals

Johnson led the league with 2,118 yards from scrimmage in 2016, but he was lost in Week 1 last year due to a thumb injury. He's back in Arizona, albeit in a new offense with a new quarterback, but there's no question Johnson is the key to the Cardinals offense. They will continue to feed him regularly.

Andrew Luck, QB, Indianapolis Colts

Luck missed all of last season following shoulder surgery and several setbacks, but he has looked healthy in the Colts preseason games. Indianapolis football fans have reason to be excited again.

Whitney Mercilus, OLB, Houston Texans

While J.J. Watt was the headliner among Texans defensive injuries last year, Mercilus' injury was also difficult to overcome after combining for 19.5 sacks from 2015-16. He played only five games last year and is now primed for a comeback.

Jordy Nelson, WR, Oakland Raiders

Nelson struggled with Green Bay's backup quarterbacks last season, and the team didn't make much effort to bring him back at age 33. He's looking to prove the doubters wrong, replacing Michael Crabtree in Oakland, and the reports in training camp have been good. Nelson is just two years removed from 1,257 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Greg Olsen, TE, Carolina Panthers

Hindered by a foot injury for much of last season, Olsen played only seven games in 2017 and struggled when he was on the field. He's healthy again, and new offensive coordinator Norv Turner has a history of making tight ends massively productive.

Jordan Reed, TE, Washington Redskins

Reed is one of the top tight ends in the league when he's healthy, but those occasions have been limited. He played only six games last year but is healthy again heading into 2018. With Alex Smith's reputation as a checkdown quarterback, Reed could benefit.

Allen Robinson, WR, Chicago Bears

Robinson suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1, but he was still able to net a big contract this offseason in Chicago. He was coming off two big years before last season, and new Bears head coach Matt Nagy could make Robinson the center of the passing game.

Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers
Jim Matthews / USA Today Sports Images

Rodgers remains one of the elite quarterbacks in the game but played only seven games last season due to a collarbone injury. He's healthy in training camp and looking to rebound, with Jimmy Graham and several rookie wideouts added to his arsenal.

20 of 25

Malcolm Smith, LB, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco had high hopes after signing Smith away from Oakland last season, but he failed to play a down due to injury. After consecutive seasons of 100-plus tackles, the 49ers are counting on a rebound season.

Darren Sproles, RB, Philadelphia Eagles
Denny Medley / USA Today Sports Images

Sproles played only three games last year due to a torn ACL and fractured arm. Now age 35, he returns to the third-down back role for the Eagles. He might play less now that Corey Clement has emerged, but Sproles should still be an important piece of the Eagles offense after averaging 166 touches in his first three seasons with the team.

Ryan Tannehill, QB, Miami Dolphins
Jasen Vinlove / USA Today Sports Images

Miami's hopes rest on Tannehill, who missed all of last season following knee surgery. He made real progress in his first season under Adam Gase in 2016, and he has plenty of weapons to work with, including DeVante Parker, Kenny Stills, Albert Wilson and Danny Amendola.

Deshaun Watson, QB, Houston Texans

Watson set the league on fire in his rookie season until tearing his ACL for the second time. The Texans quarterback had 1,699 yards passing and 19 touchdowns in only seven games, and fans hope he can recreate the elite offense they saw last year.

J.J. Watt, DE, Houston Texans

Injuries are becoming all too common for Watt, who has played only eight games over the last two seasons combined. He's still just 29 and is fully healthy in training camp. If he's stays that way, the Texans expect big things again from the three-time Defensive Player of the Year.

Carson Wentz, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

Wentz was on the road to winning the MVP in only his second season before tearing his ACL and LCL in Week 14. Philadelphia managed to win the Super Bowl without him, but Wentz is fully healthy again and primed for a huge year with the Eagles' weapons getting even better after signing Mike Wallace.
