Start ‘N’ Park Blog is taking a look back at the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver by driver. This recap will take a look at the driver’s stats, the season’s highlights, the season’s lowlights, what a quick look at next year. This installment takes a look back at Marcos Ambrose who finished in the 18th place in the final standings. 2012 Statistics: Points: 950 Position: 18th Preseason Pick: 16th Starts: 36 Poles: 2 Wins: 1 Top 5s: 3 Top 10s: 8 DNFs: 4 Earnings: $4,767,873 What Was Said Prior To The Season: “Marcos got his first win at Watkins Glen last year and now finds himself as the top dog at Richard Petty Motorsports. He should benefit from that, but I don’t see him breaking into the Chase right away. This pick of 16th is about where he was before, good runs, bad runs, then mostly average runs. I do see him continuing to improve, I just hope he has the time to do so. Only thing I would change about this team is the number on the side of the car, that style looks terrible!” What Happened In 2012: Ambrose put himself in the Chase conversation with another August win at Watkins Glen. He was never a threat, but thanks to wins counting more he could not be written off. Ambrose had stretches of great runs, such as in August he won at Watkins Glen, and then had back to back fifth place finishes at Michigan and Bristol. It seemed that the team could get all on the same page, then someone would shred those notes, and they would start all over again. On To 2013: As with teammate Almriola’s outlook, I think this team can turn the corner and make more noise in 2013. The pieces are in place, it will just be a matter of them consistently performing. Ambrose finished the year on not a great note, but they figure to start strong at Daytona.
