Ahmed wins it for D-backs with single in 13th

PHOENIX -- Heroics are expected from Paul Goldschmidt. From Nick Ahmed, not so much. Both had their moments in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs in 13 innings on Friday night. Goldschmidt tied it with a two-out, two-run homer in the 10th inning and Ahmed singled home the winning run in the 13th to give the Diamondbacks their fifth win in a row. Tuffy Gosewisch...

Questionable judgement call costs the Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates lost a game in extra innings yesterday when a double play was broken up when Nick Ahmed threw up his arm and deflected a throw that might have been an inning ending double play. In the judgement of the umpires, the runner did not intentionally interfere with the play. I find that ruling a bit spurious. Here is the play:Your browser does not support iframes...

Show of hand: All but Pirates like Ahmed's slide

PHOENIX -- Nick Ahmed had two responsibilities on the final play Sunday -- stay at first base long enough not to get picked off and get to second quickly enough to disrupt a potential double play. He was 2-for-2. Ahmed helped the D-backs to the weirdest walk-off in franchise history when he was struck on the left forearm with a throw to break up a double play as Tuffy Gosewisch scored...

Ahmed sends D-backs past Reds in 15th

CINCINNATI -- Nick Ahmed's RBI single with two outs in the 15th inning sent the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night and kept their franchise perfect when games go really long. Arizona is 13-0 all-time in games of at least 15 innings. Ahmed's single off J.J. Hoover (1-8) gave the Reds their ninth loss in 10 games since the All-Star break...

The Arizona Diamondbacks: Nick Ahmed edition

The Arizona Diamondbacks are in a situation that nobody envies. They are one of the worst teams in the major leagues with very few desirable trade assets. Fortunately there is one position where the Diamondbacks have a surplus of trade assets. They have three young shortstops that scouts have been drooling over. Two of them, Didi Gregorious and Chris Owings, have a major league resume...

D-backs future is here in Ahmed and others

SAN DIEGO -- The Diamondbacks are learning more about their future every day, probably the best way to play it since the present has not been much fun. The latest injection of young talent came Sunday, when shortstop Nick Ahmed was summoned from the minor leagues as a likely short-term replacement for Chris Owings, who became the 12th D-back to hit the disabled list this season. ...
