The biggest comebacks of 2017

2017 was a year of epic comebacks, headlined by New England's incredible 25-point comeback in Super Bowl LI. 

That wasn't the only impressive come-from-behind victory of the year, however. From the gridiron to the hardwood, ice, diamond and even the fairways, 2017 was a year full of comebacks.

Here are the 20 biggest comebacks of the year.

A sorry season ended in Week 17 for the Jaguars. Leading the Colts 17-0 in the second quarter, the Jags suffered the biggest blown lead in their history after Jack Doyle caught the go-ahead touchdown with nine seconds left to win 24-20. That game was also the only time we saw Andrew Luck take the field during the calendar year.

USC's starting quarterback, Sam Darnold, built his legend with an unbelievable comeback over Penn State in the Rose Bowl. Down 49-35 going into the fourth quarter, Darnold helped lead the Trojans to two touchdowns before a 46-year field goal won the game 52-49 as time expired. Darnold was 33-of-53 for 453 yards and five touchdowns during the contest.

The Warriors aren't supposed to blow big leads, but they suffered their sixth loss of the 2016-17 season in stunning fashion. Memphis was down 24 points in the second half and 19 points heading into the fourth quarter, but Mike Conley and Zach Randolph helped the Grizzlies tie the game at the end of regulation. Memphis dominated overtime to win 128-119 at Golden State.

New Mexico couldn't put Nevada away. Up 25 points at one point in the second half, the Lobos still held a 14-point lead with 1:03 left in the second half. Nevada came roaring back to tie the game and won 105-104 on a Jordan Caroline 3-point shot with two seconds remaining.

Down 24-14 in the third quarter, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson never lost his composure. The Tigers worked their way back in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns before the Crimson Tide responded to take a 31-28 lead with 2:07 left. Watson threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Renfrow with one second remaining to win 35-31.

There certainly wasn't a more significant comeback during 2017 than Super Bowl LI. Down 28-3 in the third quarter, Tom Brady and the Patriots went to work on the Atlanta defense. They tied the game at 28 with a 1-yard James White touchdown with 57 seconds left in regulation before another White touchdown won the game 34-28 in overtime.

Golden State can shoot the lights out, and that was certainly the case when the Warriors overcame an 18-point deficit against the Clippers to win. The team outscored L.A. 50-26 in the third quarter and won 123-113.

2016-17 was just one of those seasons for Sacramento. Leading by 28 points in the second quarter, the Kings eventually squandered the lead to San Antonio and lost 114-104 on the road. It was the eighth largest come-from-behind win in NBA history.

Down 26 points to Cleveland heading into the fourth quarter, Atlanta made a furious fourth-quarter comeback to tie the game, outscoring Cleveland 44-18. Led by Paul Millsap, the Hawks would win the game in overtime 126-125 in what is tied for the 15th largest comeback in NBA regular-season history.

Cleveland was down 25 points to Indiana at halftime during Game 3 in the first round of the NBA playoffs. After being down 26 points in the second half, LeBron James and the Cavs worked their way back for the biggest second-half comeback in NBA playoff history in a 119-114 win.

Anaheim trailed Edmonton 3-0 in a pivotal Game 5 of the NHL playoffs with less than four minutes remaining in the third period. The Ducks pulled off three goals in 3:26 to send the game to overtime before completing the incredible double-overtime victory on a goal by Corey Perry.

Down 20 points out of halftime in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final, the Warriors came back to win 113-111. They outscored San Antonio 32-21 in the fourth quarter and went on to sweep the series.

Boston trailed Cleveland by 21 points in the third quarter of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals, staring down a pending 3-0 series deficit. The Celtics came back to tie the game at 108 and won on a last-second Avery Bradley 3-pointer. The comeback win is tied for the ninth largest in NBA playoffs history.

Ahead 8-2 heading into the top of the eighth inning, Minnesota's pitching staff imploded against the Astros. Houston put together an 11-run eighth inning, including a Carlos Beltran three-run homer. The Astros would add three more runs in the ninth inning to win 16-8.

It was a very disappointing season for both UCLA and Texas A&M, with head coaches Jim Mora Jr. and Kevin Sumlin getting canned following the regular season. However, they played one of the most thrilling games of the college football season with top NFL prospect Josh Rosen orchestrating the second biggest comeback in college football history to win 45-44.

Aaron Rodgers has missed a large portion of the 2017 season with a fractured collarbone, but he looked great up to that point. During Week 3, he helped the Packers come back from a 21-7 halftime deficit against Cincinnati by throwing two touchdowns in the second half. The Packers won 27-24 in overtime.

The Twins were sitting four games below .500 (52-56) and four games out of the Wild Card on Aug. 5. After that point, they went 33-20, clinching the second Wild Card spot with 83 wins on Sept. 27. The team had one of the biggest year-to-year turnarounds in history after losing 103 games in 2016.

The heavily favored Indians got off to a quick 2-0 series lead in the best-of-five ALDS after winning Game 2 in 13 innings. The young Yankees squad came back with two straight wins at Yankee Stadium before going on the road to beat Cleveland 5-2 and win the series. Of course, the Yankees would lose to Houston in a classic seven-game ALCS.

The Dodgers couldn't put Houston away in Game 2 of the World Series. They held a 3-1 lead going into the eighth inning, but the Astros chipped away with runs in the eighth and ninth innings to go into extras. Houston went ahead 5-3 in the 10th before the Dodgers scored two runs on closer Ken Giles. George Springer hit a two-run home run in the 11th to go up 7-5, though Charlie Culberson put the Dodgers within one run with a homer before losing 7-6 in 11 innings.

Rose made a historic comeback in the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament. Trailing leader Dustin Johnson by eight shots heading into the final round, Rose shot an incredible 67, 10 strokes better than Johnson. It was tied for the third biggest final-round comeback in PGA Tour history.
