Matt Hardy isn't ready to re-sign with AEW just yet

Matt Hardy's contract with AEW is coming to an end. The veteran high flyer is nearing the end of his career. His next deal may be his last. As such, he wants to ensure that the terms on offer will allow him to continue creating a legacy. Most importantly, he wants to go out on his own terms.

During a recent episode of "The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy," he revealed that he has a contract offer from AEW on his desk.

"I have an AEW contract sitting in front of me for a few years. I'm looking through it; I'm deciding what I want to do going forward," Hardy said. "There's obviously still some options. I've got to make sure I'm aware of the ins and outs of the contract, and I wanna make sure everything is up to par as far as what I want it to be."

Hardy's last contract with AEW was signed in 2020. Throughout that deal, though, his prominence in programming has been inconsistent, his storylines have been flat and there is little momentum behind him as both a singles wrestler and a tag team competitor.

"Once again, legacy is very important to me, knowing there's only a couple more years left of doing this," Hardy continued. "Schedule is very important to me because I wanna spend as much time as I can with my family; that is very important. And, once again, just if I am working with Jeff [Hardy], it is very important to me that the Hardys are optimized. It's very important that the Hardys are optimized. It's very important that the Hardys, they go out on a strong note."

AEW's roster is full of exciting talent. Hardy may find it difficult to carve out a consistent spot on Dynamite or Collision. Instead, he may be better served as a regular on Rampage. Whether he would accept being a bigger name on the company's smallest show remains to be seen. After all, Hardy is a future Hall of Famer. He can still produce big spots when given the opportunity.

The most logical outcome is for Hardy to re-sign with AEW. He will undoubtedly seek some assurances. But given the flexibility Tony Khan provides his talent and the current upward trajectory of the company, Hardy can still end his career on a high note. After all, look at what the company did for Sting when he retired. The opportunities are there, if Hardy is willing to take them.
