The WTA Ladies Open in Lausanne is only hosting second round matches on Day 4 and already there are some very exciting matches to sink our teeth into. Parry versus Kovinic promises to be an intriguing clash of styles whilst Teichmann against Cornet is a battle for form. We’ve predicted the outcomes of these matches and more in Lausanne.

WTA Lausanne Day 4 Predictions

Diane Parry vs Danka Kovinic

Head-to-head: First meeting

Danka Kovinic is a wily clay-courter with numerous high-level wins this year–Bouzkova, Sorribes Tormo, Golubic and Dodin top the list. She has been beaten by heavy hitters, however. Diane Parry isn’t the heaviest hitter in the game but we think she has enough weight on her shots to see the Montenegrin off the court.
Prediction: Parry in 3

Ana Bogdan vs Dalila Jakupovic

Head-to-head: 1-1 (all levels)

Ana Bogdan is arguably in the form of her life. She’s at a career-high ranking of #39 in the world and she’s been winning big matches on all surfaces. Bogdan’s fresh off a title run in Iasi having defeated Irina Begu in the final. At this point in Dalila Jakupovic’s career, we’re unlikely to be surprised too much. Bogdan should be the clear favourite here given her form and power.
Prediction: Bogdan in 2

Sara Sorribes Tormo vs Tamara Zidansek

Head-to-head: Zidansek 1-0 Sorribes Tormo

Sara Sorribes Tormo has slowly been regaining traction since the start of the year. Win by win, she’s reminded the tour how much of a nuisance she can be on this surface, even for the most hardened clay-courter.

At least Tamara Zidansek has the option of trying to outhit her opponent, her forehand aided by plenty of pop on this surface. At her best, maybe the Slovenian wins this one but form probably makes Sorribes Tormo the favourite to out-grind her opponent.
Prediction: Sorribes Tormo in 3

Clara Burel vs Emma Navarro

Head-to-head: Navarro 1-0 Burel

Win after win has led Emma Navarro to the brink of the top 50. Her form has been outstanding but there remains a stark difference in power between her and the level above–she’s won one out of the 21 sets she’s played against top 50 players so far in her career.

Clara Burel isn’t quite at that level but she might be sooner rather than later. She arguably has a higher peak than her American peer but potentially won’t be able to sustain it for long enough, in similar fashion to her loss to Sorribes Tormo last week.

Prediction: Navarro in 3

Jil Teichmann vs Alize Cornet

Head-to-head: Cornet 1-0 Teichmann

Neither Alize Cornet nor Jil Teichmann are at their best at the moment. It’s Teichmann, however, that’s really been struggling for form. She can be mercurial at the best of times but, without a ton of confidence to draw on, we expect her to come out a little flat against a tricky opponent.

Clay isn’t Cornet’s forte, however, and Teichmann will be able to make a lot of headway using the bounciness of the courts. We’re tempted to side with the Swiss in a close battle given her penchant for clay.
Prediction: Teichmann in 3
