'Tennis moves on' as a disappointed Caroline Wozniacki sucks her teeth into a 'disappointing' loss and the victory of a 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva at the Australian Open

Former World No.1 and 2018 Australian Open champion, Caroline Wozniacki suffered a heartbreak at the ongoing 2024 edition of the tournament as the Dane was knocked out with a defeat in the second round. Wozniacki lost to qualifier Maria Timofeeva to see herself walking the exit door Down Under. The 33-year-old was too disappointed at the defeat.

Wozniacki said that she expected to survive for longer than she did. The Danish ace was distraught after losing it to her 20-year-old opponents despite being 1-0 up. Wozniacki was leading in the second set as well. However, she lost 12 out of the next fifteen games and eventually the match.

The 33-year-old then talked about her loss saying it was too much to take. The former World No.1 had expected a better showing considering she did decently at the 2023 US Open on her comeback. Wozniacki was feeling good physically and her first-round win is a testimony to that. However, something went off during her second-round match and Wozniacki had to pay the price.

It definitely sucks and it's disappointing. I felt like this was my match to win, and I didn't. I obviously sit here with a very disappointing feeling, because looking back, I feel like the match slid out of my hands. At this point, there's nothing I can do about it, but obviously [I’m] playing a Grand Slam and you want to keep winning. Caroline Wozniacki said. (H/T: Australian Open)

Caroline Wozniacki ready to move on as she admires Mirra Andreeva

The 33-year-old Danish ace also talked about tennis moving on with the younger generation ruling the tour with the older generation slowly fading up. Caroline Wozniacki cited Mirra Andreeva‘s example to explain how the younger generation is rising to the challenge.

As the 16-year-old Russian defeated two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur in straight sets on Wednesday, Wozniacki heaped praise on the teen sensation. She remembered how she came up on the tour at the same age as Andreeva.

Mirra, obviously I think everyone knows about her. She's playing extremely well and fearless. She came on tour I think similar age to me. I think that's what it's always been, right? You have the young ones coming up, you have the older generation, you have kind of in between. Tennis moves on. Caroline Wozniacki said.

After facing an early exit from the 2024 Australian Open, Caroline Wozniacki is not sure about her next tournament. The Dane recently confirmed dropping out of the Middle East leg of the WTA tour.
