Serena Williams says she’s ‘super interested’ in owning WNBA team
Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Serena Williams wants to be part of the WNBA. The tennis legend recently spoke to CNN and said she would love to own a WNBA team in the future.

“I absolutely would be (interested). With the right market, I would definitely be super interested in that,” Williams, 41, said in the interview. Williams already has ownership stakes in the soccer club Angel City FC and the golf franchise Los Angeles Golf Club. She wants to join the WNBA as the league continues to grow.

“We just needed the right catalyst and the right people and I think that’s been happening over the past two years. I think women’s sport is having a moment that it should have always had… Now it’s time to lift up other sports, women’s soccer, women’s basketball,” Williams added.

Another reason Williams wants to own a WNBA team is it’s safe to invest in women’s sports.

“There is no risk (factor),” she said. “Women’s sport is exciting, women are exciting to watch. More people watched the women’s college basketball than the men. I think that people are realizing that it’s exciting to watch, so it’s an overly safe bet when it comes to investing.

“What’s the difference? …  I think that even more people watched the college women’s basketball than the men. So I think that people are realizing that is exciting to watch.”

Serena Williams is a strong investor

Williams has become a strong investor over the years. Along with having ownership stakes in two pro teams, Williams has a company called Serena Ventures that has invested in 66 startups.

“I always say that I’m a sponge: At night I go to bed and I squeeze myself out so that the next day I can take up as much new information as I can,” Williams wrote in a column for Vogue in August 2022. “Every morning, I’m so excited to walk downstairs to my office and jump onto Zooms and start reviewing decks of companies we’re considering investing in.

“We’re a small but growing firm of six people scattered between Florida, where I mainly live, Texas, and California. I started investing nine years ago, and I really fell in love with early stage, whether it’s pre-seed funding, where you’re investing in just an idea, or seed, where the idea has already been turned into a product.”

Williams is arguably the most successful tennis player in history. She has won 23 major women’s singles titles, the most in the open era and the second-most all-time. Williams is the only player to win all four Grand Slams and an Olympic gold medal in singles and doubles.
