Sam Stosur hints retirement at 2023 Australian Open
IPA

Sam Stosur retired from singles last year at the Australian Open but continued to play doubles throughout the year.

The Australian will give it another shot at the Australian Open after most recently representing her nation in the Billie Jean King Cup. When she potentially says goodbye to tennis for good in a few weeks, her tearful farewell from singles last year could be topped.

“We’ll see. I’ll do January and after that, I’m not too sure,” said Stosur to The Age when discussing the possibility of playing beyond the Australian Open.

“It’s a bit weird. I feel like my life and probably lots of people’s lives have been like that in recent times. I’m kind of just going with it now," admitted Stosur who simply did not know whether she'll continue playing. She's played really well in the doubles throughout the year so she can still keep playing on a high level if she wants.

All focus is on January though: “I’m just focusing on January and doing as best I can there in the doubles and the mixed; enjoying it, getting out there one more time and seeing what happens. Hopefully, this year I can go out there and just enjoy it again. Honestly, I didn’t think I’d be playing again, so it feels like a bonus that I even get the opportunity to come back.”
