Czech tennis player Renata Voracova has joined Novak Djokovic in an immigration detention center after her visa was cancelled.
The world's No. 1 men's tennis player was held in Melbourne for several hours on Wednesday, due to an issue with his visa, and he has reportedly been denied access to Australia. The issue with Djokovic's visa stemmed from him not being able to supply sufficient proof that he is exempt from getting vaccinated against COVID-19.
Djokovic entered as the favorite to capture his 10th Australian Open title at +110. The 34-year-old is seeking a men's record 21st major title.
The 38-year-old Voracova was detained after being informed by Australian Border Force officials that she had to leave the country. Czech officials are seeking an explanation to the situation but said Voracova had decided to leave Australia, per ESPN.
"We can confirm that Czech tennis player Renata Voracova is in the same detention as Djokovic, together with several other players," the Czech Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "We submitted through our embassy in Canberra a protest note and are asking for an explanation of the situation. However, Renata Voracova decided to drop out of the tournament due to limited possibilities for training and to leave Australia."
Djokovic's case over a medical exemption has been adjourned until Monday, meaning he could spend the weekend in detention.
