"Rafa is competitive wherever he is" - Moya on Nadal's end of 2022
Peter van den Berg-USA TODAY Sports

Rafael Nadal's recent circumstances led to him having to withdraw from his Wimbledon semifinal match against Nick Kyrgios that put the rest of his season in doubt.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner was then defeated by Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round of the US Open after being shocked by Borna Coric in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters. After playing doubles with Roger Federer, who was retiring, Rafael Nadal later withdrew also from the Laver Cup. Moreover, following the birth of his first son, his continued involvement in 2022 was uncertain.

After a few weeks of ambiguity, Rafael Nadal's coach, Carlos Moya, disclosed that the Spaniard is now training for the 2022 Paris Masters and that he should also take part in the 2022 ATP Finals in Turin.

“Before arriving in Turin, you have to play matches in Paris, which are similar,” Moya told IB3 TV. “Rafa is competitive wherever he is and we go with hope and illusion.”

The Spanish coach spoke about the 22-time Grand Slam champion and his goals also before, when he said: “Being number one again has a lot of value; ending the year at the top of the rankings, even more so. If you look at his schedule, it’s clear that it’s not a goal."

"The most important thing for him is looking after his body and being well for the Grand Slams. But if it’s put in front of him, of course we’ll go for it,” said Carlos Moya.
