Petra Kvitova – 2023 Season Review

Petra Kvitova ended the 2023 season with her biggest title since 2018 and ended the year in the top 20 in the world. That said, she did not have the Grand Slam success she was hoping for. Read ahead for the highs and lows of Kvitova’s 2023 season.

Early Season

Petra Kvitova started the year in her first team event since 2014. Taking part in the inaugural United Cup, Kvitova won both her singles matches and helped secure a 3-0 win against Germany. The Czech team then lost to the USA.

Kvitova followed this up with a first quarterfinal in Adelaide before Daria Kasatkina defeated her. The Australian Open saw the 33-year-old seeded, but she lost in the second round. Doha & Dubai were not happy places in 2023 for Kvitova, as she lost before the quarterfinal stage in both events.

Indian Wells saw the Czech back in a quarterfinal, but Greek Maria Sakkari claimed the win. Kvitova followed up by winning the title in Miami, stopping Elena Rybakina from claiming the Sunshine double. The title also marked the biggest title for the Czech since 2018.

Having dropped down the rankings, the win in Miami returned the 33-year-old back into the top 10 in the world – somewhere Kvitova had not been since September 2021. A welcome return after all her problems, Kvitova hoped to build on this.

Clay and grass season

Petra Kvitova had a horrible time on the clay. The Czech withdrew from Stuttgart and Rome with injury and was knocked out in the first round in Roland Garros and Madrid. Kvitova had failed to reach the quarterfinal stage at the last 10 majors she took part in, dating back to the Australian Open in 2021.

Grass though, was a totally different matter. The Czech took the title at the German Open, incidentally, her first grass court title outside of the UK. In the final, Kvitova defeated Donna Vekic for the third time this season to lift the trophy. Also, Kvitova didn’t drop a set at the tournament.

At Wimbledon, the Czech made the second week. She then lost to Ons Jabeur in the last 16. This loss was her 10th defeat at this stage and in the majors since 2020. The 33-year-old would have liked to have capitalized on the great grass form heading into the American hard courts.

However, the next five events that Kvitova entered, she lost early – first round in both the Canadian and Cincinnati Opens. The US Open saw the Czech lose in the second round. A quarterfinal berth at the Ningbo Open, curtsey of a walkover in the second round, proved to be the best the Czech could manage. A second round loss in the China Open brought a disappointing end to the 33-year-old season.

Going into 2024, Kvitova will be looking to improve ranking position and claim more titles. A third Slam title will be the ultimate aim.
