Kei Nishikori Withdraws Also From 2023 Shanghai Masters
Kyodo News

Kei Nishikori 's comeback looked good only briefly, as the Japanese player was forced to withdraw from multiple events, including the Shanghai Masters , due to fresh injury problems.

Kei Nishikori was out of tennis for a very long time due to various injuries and surgery, which hoped to fix those problems. The Japanese player had a few setbacks during his recovery, so he pushed it back for much of this year.

He eventually made his comeback on the ATP Challenger Tour. He won it and then won his first match back on the ATP Tour as well. That was a while ago, and he hasn't played since that event, pulling out of several events, including the US Open .

Injury problems have basically ruined his dream comeback, and it's not getting any better as the Japanese player was forced to withdraw from the Shanghai Masters. He had hoped to be fit for the Asian swing, and while he's yet to withdraw from the Japan Open in Tokyo, it's unlikely that he'll actually play.

It's a devastating development for the Japanese former number one, who admitted after his win in Atlanta that he was considering retiring from the sport but opted against it, not wanting it to end that way.

We don't know what the problem right now is, but he's been injury-prone for much of his career, so it isn't something surprising. It's a shame because he's a really good player when he's able to play, but that hasn't been the case for a while now, and it remains to be seen whether it will be in the future.

It's not looking great right now, and he's not getting any younger, so in a way, this is it for him. If his body doesn't hold up during this comeback attempt, he'll likely retire from the sport.
