Caroline Wozniacki aiming high after first round win in Melbourne: ‘The dream is to win it’

Caroline Wozniacki may have only just reached the second round of the Australian Open, but she’s already dreaming of lifting the trophy.

Back at the tournament which saw her bag her only Grand Slam title back in 2018, Wozniacki is still in the beginner stages of her comeback after three-and-a-half-years off the tour.

And while her skills could not fully be put the test as a result of her opponent Magda Linette retiring after 55 minutes due to injury, the Dane believes she is playing well.

‘’I felt I played really well,” said Wozniacki, who was 6-2, 2-0 ahead when her opponent retired.

“I tried to take the ball early, tried to be aggressive. I still feel my serve could be a little better but hopefully in the next match that’s going to happen.

“And otherwise, I just feel so at home out here, this court brings back amazing memories and playing in front of all of you amazing people is so, so special to me.’’

Despite it being just her fifth tournament since making her comeback, Wozniacki isn’t afraid of dreaming big.

‘’The dream is to win it obviously,” she said.

“I’ve worked hard to be here, to be back at this stage - I didn’t think I’d be back here.

“It’s really a bonus, I’m just really grateful to be out here but I really feel like I'm playing well so why not me?’’

Wozniacki will face qualifier Maria Timofeeva in the second round on Wednesday.
