Rob Machado, one of surfing’s most stylish and beloved shaggy-haired goofyfooters, retired from full-time competition on the Championship Tour back in 2001.

Since then, he’s done specialty events, like the Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy, but mostly, he’s been a dad, an entrepreneur, a free-surfer.

But now, there’s one contest that’s pulling him back into the ring. And it’s all because of one thing: heaving, hollow Portuguese barrels.

Capitulo Perfeito (“perfect chapter” in English) is not a Championship Tour surfing event. It is, however, a serious competition comprised of elite, international tube-riders, and going down only when the appropriate swell hits. This year’s location? The heavy barreling waves of Carcavelos, just outside Lisbon, Portugal.

And the contest just went on Yellow Alert for a possible start in the coming days.

“We are keeping an eye on several swells that will grace our coast in the coming days,” says Rui Costa, the Event’s Organizer. “They have everything we’re looking for: a big West swell that hits Carcavelos with force, and North quadrant winds that sustain the waves and provide the tubes that the championship needs. One of these swells will arrive this weekend. We are closely monitoring the forecasts, aware that we have until Wednesday or Thursday to make the call if we believe this swell will allow us to fulfill the promise of having the world’s best surfers on the best waves Portugal has to offer.”

Joining Machado in the lineup of Capitulo Perfeito invitees include: former champions Tiago Pires, Nic von Rupp, Bruno Santos, Aritz Aranburu, William Aliotti and Anthony Walsh; international surfers Balaram Stack, Dylan Graves, Michael February, and Nathan Florence; and a host of local Portuguese tube-riding specialists.

Stay tuned; the event window runs through March 9th, but things are shaping up for a potential start in the coming days.
