Welcome to League One: Wrexham receives second consecutive promotion

Wrexham is headed to where it hasn't been in 20 years.

The European soccer club that received increased attention when actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased it in 2020 received its second consecutive promotion on Saturday, winning 6-0 over Forest Green.

The result means Wrexham (24-10-10) is returning to League One for the first time since the 2004-05 European Football League (EFL) season.

The club was an afterthought when Reynolds ("Deadpool") and McElhenney ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia") purchased it in November 2020.

Wrexham was relegated to the National League following the 2007-08 season and played outside of the EFL from 2008-09 through 2022-23.

It received national interest when the television network FX premiered a documentary series titled "Welcome to Wrexham" about the club and its ownership under the two Hollywood stars in August 2022. The third season premieres in May.

On April 22, 2023, Wrexham was promoted to League Two after clinching the National League with a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood.

Next up in the club's quest to make its first Premier League, Wrexham must either finish in the top two of League One or win the league's playoffs, then do that again in the EFL Championship.

It still has a long road to reach its ultimate goal, but considering where Wrexham was when it changed ownership, we're not counting on Saturday's promotion to League One being the end of this rags-to-riches story.
