On This Day in 2001, Celtic traveled to Old Trafford to play Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in a testimonial match for Ryan Giggs. It may have been a game to celebrate the Welshman’s service to The Red Devils but it was the visitors that stole the show after a blistering start blew United away.

Chris Sutton found himself on the end of an Agathe cross before Lennon scored a rare go after a neat piece of build-up play with Henrik Larsson. Van Nistelrooy pulled one back before Lambert gave the Celts a two-goal cushion in what was an ill-tempered ‘friendly’ match. Veron gave United home but Lubo Moravcik made it 4-2 to ensure that the win would be Celtic’s. Van Nistelrooy pulled won back but it was a sign of Celtic’s strength as they produced a good victory over United.
