USWNT star Alex Morgan 'was fairly sick' with COVID-19

United States Women's National Team superstar Alex Morgan was set to participate in a January training camp alongside her American teammates coming off a stint with FA Women's Super League side Tottenham Hotspur. However, the 31-year-old generated headlines on Jan. 5 when she confirmed that she, her daughter Charlie and husband Servando contracted COVID-19 over the holidays. 

Morgan addressed her bout with the coronavirus while speaking with reporters on Thursday.

"I was fairly sick," Morgan explained, per ESPN. "Me and my whole family got it — Servando and Charlie — so with that said, we were together for 10, 12, 14 days and kind of just recovering, sleeping as much as we could.

"I was fighting off a little bit of a fever for quite a few days but as I got back and kind of took the right steps to get my body back into shape, I started to feel really good after about three weeks or so but it did take a little bit, and it took a lot of patience as well, on my end."

The U.S. women are scheduled to open the SheBelieves Cup on Feb. 18 versus Canada and will also face Brazil and Argentina in the tournament. Morgan made five appearances and scored two goals for Tottenham but elected to return home and to National Women's Soccer League club Orlando Pride in late 2020.

"As I went through the season with Tottenham, I really enjoyed my time and I really loved it more than I expected," Morgan said of her brief Tottenham tenure. 

"I got to know the girls a lot more than I thought and the decision ended up being a lot harder than I expected. I really weighed both sides for quite a few weeks.

"I think ultimately, it just came down to coming back to the United States because that way I would keep our family as close together as possible, given the circumstances. With the pandemic continuing to really to extend into 2021, I just felt it was just best for me to be in the United States and just be available for the national team and start off a full season with Orlando Pride."

In a statement shared on the Tottenham website in December, club head of women's football Heather Cowan said: 

"We were delighted at the start of the season when Alex chose us as her Club to help regain fitness and take her first steps back into competitive football after giving birth earlier this year.

"It has been a pleasure to have Alex with us during this period and the whole squad has taken a lot from working every day with someone at the top of the women's game.

"We wish Alex all the best for the future both at club and international level as she prepares to return back home with her family. She will always be welcome here at Spurs."
