Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos is set to play for Germany at this summer's UEFA European Championship after coming out of international retirement.

Kroos called time on his international career in July 2021 after scoring 17 goals in 106 senior games for Germany.

But he has now reversed that decision following talks with national team manager Julian Nagelsmann.

Kroos explained in an Instagram post on Thursday: "I will play for Germany again in March.

"Why? Because I was asked by the federal coach, I'm in the mood and I'm sure that with the team at the European Championship, much more is possible than most believe right now!"

Germany failed to progress beyond the group stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

However, Kroos and Co will have home advantage at Euro 2024.

The tournament hosts will face Scotland in Munich in the opening match on June 14.

Germany have not been champions of Europe since 1996 but they won the World Cup in 2014.

Kroos played the full 120 minutes as Germany beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the 2014 final.

He had scored two goals in Germany's famous 7-1 win over Brazil in the semi-finals five days earlier.
