Sheffield United defender Mason Holgate, on loan from Everton, faced significant criticism from Jermaine Beckford following his red card in Sunday afternoon’s game against Brighton.

Holgate found it difficult to secure consistent playing time under Sean Dyche, signaling his exclusion from Dyche’s plans, and so far his short-term move to the Blades has not been good.

On his debut against Aston Villa he was on the end of a 5-0 thrashing, where he was partly at fault for the first goal. Holgate then had a bounce-back performance in a 3-1 win at Luton, but Sunday was another poor day for him.

The 27-year-old defender, on loan for the remainder of the season, received a red card for a reckless challenge on Kaoru Mitoma. Brighton emerged victorious with a 5-0 win, but Holgate’s challenge has sparked widespread discussion.

Holgate has since issued apologies to Mitoma and his club teammates, with Chris Wilder confirming to SUTV that he will face fines for his behavior. “He’s apologised to the boys. He understands it and he’s an experienced pro. He’s got it wrong.”

“I get tough tackles, but this is just reckless… I really wanted this move to be the one to help him find his stride, but this is shocking,” Beckford wrote on social media.

Mason Holgate likely saw this opportunity as his final chance to make a significant impact and demonstrate his worth to his parent manager. However, his loan spell is already shaping up to be a major disaster.
