Soccer team owned by Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney wins league title

Wrexham AFC, the Welsh soccer club owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, accomplished a major feat on Saturday by winning the National League title and advancing up to League Two of the English football league system.

By going from the National League to League Two, Wrexham is going from the fifth tier to the fourth tier for the first time in 15 years.

Reynolds and McElhinney bought the team in 2020 and have infused new life into the club after enthusiasm had dwindled. The club became even more popular outside of Wrexham with the FX docu-series, "Welcome To Wrexham", that documented the team and the ownership of the two actors.

The team narrowly missed out on promotion a year ago but was able to get the job done this year.

Along with owning Wrexham, Reynolds has also expressed interest in expanding his sports ownership portfolio and is part of one of the groups that is trying to purchase the NHL's Ottawa Senators

The next step for Wrexham though would be earning promotion from League Two up to League One, then the English Football League Championship, and then ultimately the Premier League.

For Wrexham to advance to League One next season they would either have to finish in the top-three of League Two, or win a playoff involving the next four teams in the standings.
