Sheffield Utd defender Holgate on Villa thrashing: A lot went wrong

Sheffield United defender Mason Holgate admits it was a tough home debut against Aston Villa.

The Blades were thrashed 5-0 by Villa at Bramall Lane.

Holgate said: "Quite a lot [went wrong] if we're losing 5-0 at home. I'm new to the boys but there's a lot we need to work on.

"Once the first goal comes in there's a drop in confidence. Before you know it you blink and the game is out of sight.

"After the first goal goes in a lot of heads drop. Only we can fix that on the pitch. It's about digging down. It got away from us too easily.

"It seemed too easy in the first half."

On the better second-half showing, he added: "They were 5-0 up at that point so maybe they foot their foot off the pedal. You have to dust yourself down. There's still lots of games to go. It's still in our hands."
