Multiple sources in Italy claim Serie A strugglers Salernitana are in talks with ex-Bayern Munich and Lyon centre-back Jerome Boateng who is available as a free agent.

Sky Sport Italia and all Italian sports papers report the Granata have opened talks with the 35-year-old centre-back who is currently without a club following the end of his contract with Ligue 1 side Lyon.

Sky Sport claims Thursday could be a ‘key date’ adding that Franck Ribery has been involved in the negotiation given that the ex-French star and Boateng played together at Bayern Munich.

Ribery, 40, retired in 2022 after one season at the Stadio Arechi but is still part of Salernitana’s technical staff.

Boateng’s contract with Lyon expired in June 2023. He played 35 games across all competitions with the Ligue 1 side.

He is the brother of Kevin-Prince Boateng, a former midfielder for Milan, Fiorentina, Sassuolo, Genoa, Tottenham and Barcelona, among others.

Salernitana confirmed Toma Basic and Alessandro Zanoli’s loan moves from Lazio and Napoli on Wednesday and hope Boateng will follow the pair.
