Rapids draw with short-handed Sounders
Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

Kevin Cabral scored in the 88th minute as the visiting Colorado Rapids rallied for a 1-1 draw with the 10-man Seattle Sounders on Saturday afternoon in a Major League Soccer match.

Raul Ruidiaz scored on an early penalty kick for the Sounders (0-1-2, 2 points), who were short-handed after midfielder Josh Atencio was issued a second yellow card in the 57th minute for a dangerous sliding tackle.

Seattle goalkeeper Andrew Thomas, starting for the injured Stefan Frei, made seven saves - including one on a penalty kick by Djordje Mihailovic in the 68th minute.

The tying goal came after Mihailovic took a 25-yard kick that appeared headed for the upper right corner of the net until a leaping Thomas got his fingertips on the shot.

The ball ricocheted off the post and fell to Cabral, who tapped it into an open net with his left foot.

Zack Steffen stopped two shots for the Rapids (1-1-2, 5 points).

It appeared the Rapids would pull even after Rafael Navarro was tripped just inside the top left of the 18-yard box by Seattle defender Jackson Regan.

Mihailovic stepped up to the spot but his shot toward the lower left corner was smothered by Thomas.

Ruidiaz drew Seattle's PK in the 11th minute. With the ball just outside the top left of the penalty area, he looked like he was going to try to dribble the ball toward the center of the field but instead took a quick shot that deflected off the outstretched right arm of defender Keegan Rosenberry.

Ruidiaz chipped the penalty down the middle as Steffen dived to his left.

Ruidiaz had a chance to double the lead in the 27th minute, but his 25-yard shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Seattle's Xavier Arreaga put a header off a corner kick just over the crossbar in the 32nd minute.

The Rapids' best chance of the first half came in stoppage time, as Darren Yapi found himself with the ball just outside of the 6-yard box.

Yapi's shot was blocked by defender Nouhou Tolo's sliding tackle.

Sounders midfielder Albert Rusnak and defender Yeimar Gomez Andrade came off the bench in the second half to make their season debuts as Seattle tried to protect its lead.
