Minnesota to host 2022 MLS All-Star Game

The 2022 Major League Soccer All-Star Game has a home.

MLS announced Tuesday that next year's All-Star Game will be held at Allianz Field, home of league side Minnesota United, on Aug. 10, 2022.

The 19,400-seat arena opened in 2019 and previously hosted two CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage matches and also a United States Women's National Team friendly later that same year.

"We are proud to bring the 2022 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target to Minnesota," MLS commissioner Don Garber said in the prepared statement. "Since the club began play in the league in 2017, Minnesota United and their incredible fan base have played a key role in the continued rise of MLS and growth of our sport throughout the U.S. As the eyes of the soccer world turn to Allianz Field next August 10, the people of Minnesota will be fantastic hosts and the supporters and 'Wonderwall' will create a memorable atmosphere for our marquee summer event."

As Jeff Carlisle explained for ESPN, the opponent and format for the All-Star Game are not yet known. MLS All-Stars toppled a Liga MX All-Star squad via a shootout in Los Angeles this summer, but there were no league All-Star festivities in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Throughout its history, MLS has hosted East-West All-Star Games but also had squads of league stars face international clubs such as Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and, most recently, Atletico Madrid in 2019.
