Milan Loanee Inspire Monza to Emphatic Win at Verona

Milan loanee Lorenzo Colombo delivered a match-winning performance as Monza toppled relegation-threatened Hellas Verona 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. The prodigious striker scored on either side of halftime to seal the visitors’ emphatic win at the Marc’Antonio Bentegodi. While his parent club Milan suffered another catastrophe on Saturday night, going down 1-0 to Udinese , Colombo announced his candidacy for a ‘Player of the Week’ award with a blistering showing. The 21-year-old opened the scoring with a stunning solo goal, using his pace to elude his markers before finishing off with a nifty chip over the goalkeeper. If the first goal was impressive and, more importantly, got Monza off the mark, the second was exquisite. Colombo found a pocket of space on the edge of the box and unleashed an unstoppable effort toward the top corner, leaving Verona stopper Lorenzo Montipo helpless. The Italian youngster couldn’t have timed his moment of brilliance any better. Verona looked to have gained control of proceedings in the second half, enjoying more possession and creating several promising half-chances. But Colombo’s strike put the game to rest, providing Monza with more breathing space, which they took advantage of through Luca Caldriola, who made it 3-0 in the 84th minute. Despite salvaging some pride through Michael Folorunsho three minutes later, Verona stuttered again, slumping to a seventh defeat in nine Serie A games (D2). As for Monza, they bounced back from a two-game winless league run (D1, L1), while Colombo made Milan second-guess their decision to loan him out and sign Luka Jovic instead.
