After the shock announcement he asked Lazio to terminate his contract, Luis Alberto spoke directly to fans. ‘I will give my all to the last minute.’

The midfielder has been at the Stadio Olimpico since the transfer from Liverpool in 2016 and is considered by many to be one of the key players in the squad.

However, the resignation of Maurizio Sarri, the arrival of Igor Tudor to use him in a new role and frustration with President Claudio Lotito all came together to set the scene for his exit.

Luis Alberto announced live on DAZN moments after the final whistle of the 4-1 win over Salernitana on Friday evening that he had asked the club to terminate his contract at the end of the season, letting him walk away for free.

He later wrote a message on his Instagram account.

“I am grateful for the show of affection, as my rapport with the Lazio fans is excellent and I am proud of that. I thank everyone for all they did over my years at the club, especially the lads in the Curva Nord and Tribuna Tevere sections who always supported me.

“I will always have you in my heart. I will continue to work hard and give my all on the field until the last minute of the last game, just as I always have done.”

It is not the first time that Luis Alberto has been seemingly on the verge of leaving Lazio, but this public announcement takes it to a new level.

His contract with the club runs until June 2027, so it remains to be seen if Lazio will accept his request and terminate by mutual consent, or try to sell him for the highest fee.

This caused problems last summer, when he wanted to join his beloved Sevilla, but they could not meet the asking price.
