Alisson Becker is the goalkeeper with Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back and Andy Robertson at left-back. Virgil van Dijk is the captain and left centre-back, whilst Jarell Quansah has started the last two over Ibrahima Konate.
Wataru Endo holds down the midfield with the number six Alexis Mac Allister to his left. Harvey Elliott played excellently against Tottenham Hotspur, filling a creative void in the midfield.
On the left-wing is Luis Diaz with Mohamed Salah on the right. Cody Gakpo started the last two over Darwin Nunez as striker.
It was a stunning win for the Reds against Spurs last week, going 4-0 up within the hour. An abundance of chances were created, with shots of a total 1.92 expected goals missed. Two “big chances” were missed whilst two were converted.
Gakpo dropped deep from his striker position as Elliott pushed up from midfield, resulting in a duo of free-roaming playmakers. Together they created seven chances, had two assists, and each scored. The Englishman netted a sensational effort from outside of the box, and the Dutchman a clever header.
We expect the previously “easy scapegoat” to start again.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side proved that they still don’t have a watertight defence. Tottenham dominated the last half-hour, scoring two past the 70th minute. Richarlison even forced a good save from a one-on-one in the 87th.
It’s hard to predict which Liverpool side will emerge against Aston Villa: the one we saw against the Lilywhites or the one that had underperformed for the weeks prior. However, Unai Emery’s team are on a questionable run andwill likely tired from Thursday’s match.
Stefan Bajcetic returned from his long-term injury in the previous match, and Conor Bradley returned to the matchday squad.
Prior to the Tottenham game, Klopp revealed that Diogo Jota is yet to return to training but was “progressing well” as of April 26.
Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara won’t feature again this season.
