Sheffield United faces the prospect of another significant setback as defender John Egan is poised for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Egan, who limped off during the 2-0 defeat at West Ham, was seen leaving the stadium on crutches. The Irishman’s absence from the latest Ireland squad for the upcoming two weeks raises concerns, and reports from RTE suggest that the situation might be more severe than initially anticipated.

The Blades’ backroom staff had initially hoped United’s captain’s injury would be minor, but current indications suggest there will be an extended absence, with John Egan expected to miss at least the next few weeks.

His unfortunate injury will open the door for either Chris Basham or Auston Trusty. Basham has been a regular substitute in the second half of games so far. Starting Basham against Fulham will see Anel Ahmedhodzic move to the central spot in the back three, where many fans argue that’s his best position.

Trusty hasn’t been “trusted” much this season, with the American making only a couple of sub appearances after his £5m move from Arsenal. Paul Heckingbottom has notably prioritised Basham over Trusty, but after he impressed in his appearance against West Ham perhaps the manager will have a re-think.
