Former Sunderland boss urged to put himself forward for new challenge

Dwight Yorke believes his former Sunderland manager Roy Keane would be ‘perfect’ for the Republic of Ireland job.

Yorke played with Keane at Manchester United and then for him at Sunderland.

That spell on Wearside proved to be the pinnacle of Keane’s managerial career so far, and that has surprised Yorke.

However, he believes an international job May belting the best out of him.

Speaking to Instant Casinos, Yorke said: “Roy Keane to Ireland? Roy would be a perfect international manager.

“I’ve been around him as a player and a person and I think he’d be suited to managing a country more than he would be at a club which is more of a full-time role.

“He’s always had the attributes to be a top manager but he hasn’t been able to produce it when he’s been given that chance.”

Keane was reportedly close to a return to Sunderland two years ago, but the move didn't manifest. 

Speaking on Sunderland Til I Die, owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus said it 'played out a lot more in the media than in the club,' though. 

He's not expected to be a contender for the vacant Sunderland head coach role at the end of the season.
