Former French international and long-time Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires provided his take on Georginio Wijnaldum’s free transfer move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Last year, PSG only signed two midfielders over the summer transfer window with the additions of Danilo Pereira and Rafinha. Now, PSG already has its first midfield signing of the year with Wijnaldum.

There is much excitement revolving around Wijnaldum’s move to PSG.

For Pires, he sees that the French powerhouse hit a home run with this free transfer deal.

In speaking to Le Parisien, Pires signaled out Wijnaldum’s consistency as a midfielder as one reason why success will be on the horizon with his upcoming run at PSG.

“I’ve seen him play at a very good level for several seasons now,” Pires said. “That’s what’s hard when you play at the highest level: to be consistent.

“Physically, he is at the top. He is in a kind of progression and Sunday’s game [vs Ukraine] confirms it; he is an extremely important player. Very, very good recruit for PSG.”

Wijnaldum will surely bring versatility to PSG’s midfield setup as well, considering that he has had experience in playing as a base and central attacking midfielder with the likes of Liverpool and currently with the Netherlands national team.
