Fiorentina have announced that Ivory Coast international Christian Kouame has been released from hospital after undergoing treatment for malaria.

The forward had contracted the disease during his time participating in the Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped the Ivory Coast to win the tournament.

He returned to training in Florence and felt unwell on Tuesday night, leading to his hospitalisation and tests showing the presence of malaria.

A statement from the Viola today confirmed that Kouame has been released from hospital and returned home, but he remains under the treatment of Professor Bartoloni at the Careggi Hospital for Infectious Diseases.

Kouame is far from the only player to have contracted malaria during the Africa Cup of Nations, which ran from January to mid-February in the Ivory Coast.

Malaria is spread through mosquito bites, but is not infectious from person to person.

Fiorentina will be in action in Serie A with Monday’s match against Lazio and released a list of the players at the disposal of coach Vincenzo Italiano.
