Everton Handed Second Punishment For PSR Breach

Everton have been handed a two-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR). The punishment was given by an independent commission appointed by the Premier League in January.

It is the club’s second punishment this season, previously being docked six points for their first PSR breach. The most recent punishment is for a three-year accounting period that ended after the 2022/23 season.

What’s Next For Everton

Everton have quickly made their intentions clear, in a statement released by the club they have stated that: “The Club and its legal representatives have begun preparations to appeal the Commission’s decision.”

An appeal is likely to not be decided by the campaign’s end, so if they were to find themselves in the relegation zone there is a possibility that they survive after the last game.

What It Means For The Rest Of The Season

The Toffees now sit 16th on the Premier League table, just two points outside the relegation zone. The win at the weekend, their first of 2024, against Burnley has provided some breathing room with seven games left to play.

The result from the commission will give Luton Town and Nottingham Forest more hope at survival this season. Both teams are still to face Everton before the end of the term, two games that will likely decide the fate of all teams involved.

Without the eight points deducted from their points tally this campaign, the Toffees would be on 35 points and sitting a comfortable 14th on the table. Now that they have their first win of the year, many fans would like to see them push on and not leave survival until the last match of the season once again.
