Edin Dzeko would have gladly continued at Inter if given the chance. Instead, the management picked Romelu Lukaku over him at the beginning of last summer. He had already signed with Fenerbahce when that negotiation fell through. He dished on what occurred in his mind to Prime Video (via La Gazzetta dello Sport).

“I would have been happy to stay because I felt great with the Nerazzurri. I think the executives made such choice to give Lukaku more trust and avoid having a cumbersome player like me that could have bothered him in the sense that he wouldn’t have started all the time. That’s why I was surprised that he didn’t return.”

Dzeko has no ill feelings toward Inter.

“My two-year spell was wonderful. Unfortunately, it didn’t end in the way we hoped. We were unlucky in the Champions League final against Manchester City because we had some chances. That’s football. It’s hard to win if you don’t score.”

Our Take on Dzeko and Inter

They wound up signing a similar player like Marko Arnautovic, so they probably would have brought him back if he was still available. His remarks track and confirm that they thought they had Lukaku in the bag. It would have been intriguing to see whom they would have targeted to round out their attack had the Belgian returned and if they would have still spent for Benjamin Pavard.
