'Distraught… no hope' – Top pundit on what Chelsea fans have been telling him about their club

Gary Lineker was on his podcast “The Rest is Football” this week, when the topic of Chelsea came up.

Lineker revealed that he’s friends with a lot of Chelsea fans and that they are passing on the overall sentiment in the fanbase now: frustration, disconnection, hopelessness, embarrassment. All are to be expected when new ownership takes over, guts the club, replaces the whole playing squad at vast expense and seems to have little to no respect for the history of the organisation. All while picking up record breakingly bad results.

“I don’t live that far from Chelsea. I have a lot of Chelsea fans that live around me. I have a lot of Chelsea fans that are friends as well and they are distraught at the moment,” Lineker explained.

“They feel there is no hope. I suppose they were spoilt during that Abramovich era in many ways but given the fact they spent so much money, they are miles off it aren’t they?”

Our concerns are not just that there seems little hope of winning anything major at the moment, or at any point in the near future. The real concern is that fans are suddenly feeling a total lack of connection with the club, which is moving away from them and detaching itself from its roots in London.
