There is some confusion over the Lautaro Martinez goal against Salernitana last night, as while some argued Carlos Augusto’s assist was a foul throw, closer inspection suggests his boot was just about on the line.

The controversy erupted on social media following last night’s 4-0 victory at San Siro and many complained it looked as if the wingback had one foot entirely on the playing surface when taking that throw-in.

The IFAB rules state that during a throw-in, the player must “have part of each foot on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline.”

A throw-in would not have been within the purview of the VAR protocol, so it could not have been corrected.

However, DAZN refereeing expert Luca Marelli took a closer look at the footage and notes that Carlos August had his left foot partly on the line and the toe of his right boot was just touching the line too.

It made little difference to the match regardless, as Inter ran riot against Salernitana in a 4-0 victory with goals from Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martinez, Denzel Dumfries and Marko Arnautovic.
