90min are today reporting that Matty Cash as a transfer target to potentially replace the injured Reece James.

The Blues are apparently considering the 26 year old, who has been great for Unai Emery’s high flying Aston Villa this season.

We don’t believe this at all, especially with Malo Gusto back fit and playing so well last night. While James is out he will take over as first choice, with Axel Disasi regularly replacing him. Given the FFP situation and need to cover other areas, it feels unlikely they will spend the pretty serious money it would take to sign the appropriately named Cash.

There’s plenty of talent to be promoted from the youth teams too – not that the club has done much of that recently. If James is still out or struggling post surgery come this summer we’d certainly see another player being bought in that position, but not in January.
