An injury to Manuel Akanji sours Manchester City’s win over Huddersfield Town

An injury to Manuel Akanji was the only sour note of Manchester City’s 5-nil win over Huddersfield Town at the Etihad Stadium. The champions cruised to an emphatic victory in the FA Cup third-round tie. But it may have come at a cost with an injury to the versatile defender.

The Swiss international went down after a strong challenge from Huddersfield midfielder Alex Matos in the 16th minute. After a brief pause in play the defender attempted to play on. But he was substituted minutes later as he was replaced by midfielder Matheus Nunes. It appeared to be a left knee issue that forced Akanji from the pitch.

It would be a cruel blow if the treble winners were without Akanji’s services for some time. The defender has become a vital part of Pep Guardiola’s set-up. His versatility is an often overlooked ingredient of the City machine. Akanji’s ability to play in multiple positions makes him an underrated asset for the world champions.

With Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne all back training or back on the pitch it leaves only John Stones on the injury list for the champions. With Akanji going down yesterday City will be hoping his injury isn’t too serious as players return from injury layoffs.

Pep Guardiola will next face the media before next weekend’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United. An update on the injury status of Manuel Akanji will be expected from the City manager if no information is forthcoming beforehand.
