Mammoth Mountain, CA made international headlines last season.

Record snowfall to the tune of nearly 900 inches at The Summit allowed lifts to spin from November 5th, 2022 to August 6th, 2023. It was the resort's second longest season at 275 days. This season will be much shorter.

Mammoth confirmed today via social media that Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2024 will be the final day of the Winter '23/'24 season.

Mammoth will end the season with 200 days of skiing and riding, still amongst the longest of any ski resort in North America.

The resort has recorded 367 inches at The Main Lodge this season, below the reported average of 400 inches, and about half of last season's record-breaking 700+ inches.

However, as skiers know, total snowfall doesn't paint the entire picture. Mammoth is still boasting snow base depths ranging from 60-95 inches as of May 7th, 2024.

Surely that's enough to extend the season into June, right? Not so fast, Mammoth explains more about the decision in the caption:

"We are closing a bit early this season to ensure our summer construction projects are completed smoothly and in a timely fashion for an even better experience next season. Head to our stories to ask questions and hear more about the improvements we are making this summer."

The replacement of Broadway Express (Chair #1) is the largest offseason project for Mammoth, but the resort clarified that it will also make "mechanical upgrades" on Face Lift Express (Chair #3) and Unbound Express (Chair #6).

One of the downsides to last season's immense snowfall, for some, was the delayed opening of the resort's robust bike park.

Mammoth just announced that mountain bikers won't have to wait long this season. The Mammoth Bike Park will open on Friday, May 24th, 2024, meaning Memorial Day Weekend will feature both skiing and biking.

The early closing, by Mammoth standards, might come as a disappointment to skiers looking to milk as many spring days on snow as possible, but cry not, my friends.

We'll always have the memories of skiing perfect corn throughout the entirety of Summer 2023. Nobody can take that from us!
