Vegas Golden Knights sign Noah Hanifin to eight-year, $58.8M contract extension
? Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

The Vegas Golden Knights have locked up a key asset for a long time.

On Thursday, the team announced it has signed defenseman Noah Hanifin to an eight-year contract extension that will kick in next season.

The contract will carry a $7.35 million AAV until the end of the 2031-32 season, with $29.4 million in signing bonuses over the first four seasons.

The contract has a full no-trade clause in the first six seasons, with a modified no-trade clause starting for the last two. Starting July 1, 2030, Hanifin will submit a 15-team no-trade list.

Hanifin came to Vegas after being acquired from the Calgary Flames in a three-team deal the day before the NHL Trade Deadline last month. The Golden Knights got a steal on the trade, as they are only paying 25% of Hanifin’s $4.95 million cap hit, with the Flames and Flyers divvying up the remaining 75%.

Hanifin was part of a series of moves made by Vegas general Kelly McCrimmon prior to the deadline to bolster the reigning Stanley Cup Champions roster.

The 27-year-old blueliner is in the final season of a six-year contract he signed with Calgary in August 2018.

The change of scenery has hardly slowed down Hanifin’s production. After scoring 35 points in 61 games with the Flames this season, the Boston College product has notched two goals and nine points in his 16 appearances with the Golden Knights, including a goal and an assist on Monday night against the Vancouver Canucks.

Along with spending time with the Carolina Hurricanes, Hanifin has played in 675 NHL games, scoring 62 goals and 221 assists, including eight points in 27 playoff games.

As a result of the singing, Vegas only has one defenseman on its active roster who is set to be a free agent this summer, and that is Alec Martinez.

According to CapFriendly, the Golden Knights are projected to have just under $1.5 million in cap space next season.

Vegas (42-28-8) is still trying to lock down a playoff spot. They hold the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, three points ahead of the St. Louis Blues. The Golden Knights are also just a point back of the Los Angeles Kings for third in the Pacific Division.
