An NHL franchise is coming to Utah next season, and the team’s owner wants fans to have a say in coming up with a name.

Ryan Smith and his Smith Entertainment Group finalized their purchase of the Arizona Coyotes last month. The franchise is moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Smith has said he does not want to rush coming up with a name for the team and is willing to use a placeholder name like the Washington Commanders did when they were the Washington Football Team.

On Wednesday, Smith Entertainment Group sent out a survey asking fans to vote for their favorite from a list of 20 potential names. The options are Venom, Ice, Freeze, Fury, Blizzard, Blast, Mountaineers, Caribou, Frost, Outlaws, Canyons, Mammoth, HC, Glaciers, Squall, Powder, Hive, Yeti, Swarm and Black Diamonds.

Based on reactions from fans on social media, Outlaws seems to be the most popular choice. Freeze and Fury also seem to have generated some positive feedback.

The Coyotes went 36-41-5 and missed the playoffs this season. They have been to the postseason just once in the past 12 years, which has contributed to them not having a very loyal following. Most hockey fans will welcome the team’s move from Phoenix to Salt Lake City.
