Toronto trade target: Calgary Flames trade Chris Tanev to the Dallas Stars

According to Daily Faceoff Insider Frank Seravalli, the Calgary Flames have acquired a 2024 2nd-round pick, a conditional 2026 3rd-round pick, and prospect Artem Grushnikov in a three-way trade with the Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils.

Along with acquiring defenseman Chris Tanev, the Dallas Stars have also acquired goalie Cole Brady, a 2019 5th-round pick of the New Jersey Devils, in the three-way trade.

The New Jersey Devils have also received a 2026 4th-round pick from Dallas in the trade for retaining 25% of Chris Tanev’s contract.

Rumours around Chris Tanev had been loud all season long, given his UFA status at the end of the season and the uncertainty around him potentially re-signing with the Calgary Flames. After Calgary got off to a slow start this year, along with the Nikita Zadorov trade request, Tanev, along with Noah Hanifin, among others on the Flames’ roster, had been thrown into trade rumours as potential trade candidates ahead of the NHL’s 2024 trade deadline.

Tanev, Hanifin, Lindholm, and Markstrom were the four big names on every trade deadline board. After the Calgary Flames dealt Elias Lindholm to the Vancouver Canucks roughly a month ago, the other three names were the center of attention ahead of the trade deadline.

Tanev, a Toronto, Ontario native, had been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs as a potential right-handed defenseman target this season for many reasons. He fits the need that the Maple Leafs are in search of right now, from Toronto, and of course, the connection with Toronto’s new General Manager, Brad Treliving, who signed Tanev in Calgary ahead of the 2020-21 season.

The asking price for the 34-year-old defenseman was reportedly always a second-round pick, but the Flames were hopeful the longer they waited to trade him, a first-round selection would’ve been coughed up. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, and Calgary ended up receiving a second-rounder, along with another pick and a 23-year-old defence prospect for the veteran blue liner.
