Calgary Flames forward Brad Richardson was ejected from Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning after throwing a high hit on opposing forward Mathieu Joseph.

The incident occurred at the 14:41 mark of the second period when Richardson skated across the width of the offensive zone and extended his elbow upward, clipping Joseph’s chin.

Lightning forward Boris Katchouk immediately reacted to the hit by seizing Richardson, leading to a fight between the two players. Both Richardson and Katchouk were assessed five minutes for fighting, with Katchouk given an additional two-minute minor penalty for instigating and a ten-minute misconduct.

Richardson was assessed a match penalty for his original hit on Joseph, putting the Flames down a man on the ice for five minutes. After Katchouk’s instigator penalty expired, the Lightning enjoyed a continuous three-minute power play with Brett Ritchie serving the remaining balance of Richardson’s major.

The Lightning failed to score on their three-minute advantage. They currently lead the Flames by a 1–0 score after two periods, with Corey Perry’s opening goal coming just two minutes before Richardson’s match penalty.

The Flames trail the Lightning 27–13 in the shots on goal column through 40 minutes.
