Despite all of the moves the Nashville Predators made on deadline day and the day prior, what many were waiting for is to see if Alexandre Carrier would be moved or stay with the team, potentially signing a contract extension.

While Barry Trotz decided to keep the defenseman for the remainder of the season, he gave a big contract update.

"We're still talking. We're not there yet. But at the same time, both sides have got to come together. That was part of the unique situation. We had so many free agents where I had to decide, okay, I want to get something, but I want to keep the team and keep it strong. I want to do certain things that can make us better. And I didn't feel it [with Carrier]. That was the price of doing business, if you will, of keeping the team strong, giving you a really good piece there. And we're going to work together to see if we can get something that makes both sides happy."

After not dealing Carrier to another contender, there are just two options with him left. Trotz is clearly trying to work on an extension with him, so we will call that option one. I think it may be the more likely scenario since he wasn't traded as there will be more incentive to sign him rather than let him walk in free agency.

The other option is that Carrier isn't signed and he is considered the Predators' rental at no cost. This isn't horrible if the team makes some noise in the postseason and the defender contributes, but at the end of the day Carrier was the top remaining right-shot defenseman on the market and could've gotten a strong return as the Predators weren't actually desperate to move him, thus keeping his price where it was.

All of the moves made by the Predators felt like a 'just in case we get hot' mentality. With strong goaltending and a little bit of scoring, any team can go on a run as we've seen many times before. At this point the Predators are hoping for a strong finish from Carrier and a contract signed before that to relieve any stress surrounding the situation.
