Penguins Need Sidney Crosby to Break Slump
USA TODAY Sports

PITTSBURGH – In a typical season, Sidney Crosby is far and away the best player in the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup. While that has been the case for most of the 2023-24 season, there’s something wrong with Crosby as the Penguins hit a critical stretch.

Despite a 3-6-1 record in their last 10 games, the Penguins are still within striking distance of a playoff spot. They are five points back of the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference and have multiple huge contests right around the corner.

During this 10-game run, Crosby has not scored a single goal and only five assists. His yearly point-per-game but the Penguins’ season will be put back on track if he finds his rhythm.

Crosby knows he needs to find that extra gear, especially if the playoffs are on the line. Upcoming games against the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings are perfect opportunities for him to get back on his horse.

“You get excited for those opportunities, especially this time of year,” Crosby said. “The points are so important. Every game becomes more and more important. The desperation and urgency kind of elevates.”

Crosby doesn’t look too deeply into his own numbers, as his focus is always on the team's success. He noted how vital it is for not just him but the team to come together for a strong run.

“As a player and team, you have to elevate.”

The Penguins still have hope they can reach the playoffs. They will need great efforts from the entire team, but the single most important piece of a successful stretch run will be Crosby finding his touch.

Crosby spent a good chunk of the season forcing his way into MVP discussions. While those have faded, he can jump right back in if he returns to form and carries the Penguins into the playoffs.
