Penguins' Brock McGinn, Mark Friedman Clear Waivers
USA TODAY Sports

Prior to their contest against the Nashville Predators, the Pittsburgh Penguins placed Brock McGinn and Mark Friedman on waivers.

The Penguins will be given some, but not all of the cap relief, as both McGinn and Friedman went unclaimed.

There is yet to be an update on the status of either player, but a common practice when a player clears waivers is to send them to the AHL.

It is likely that will be Friedman's destination, but the options are open for McGinn.

If the Penguins decide to send McGinn to the AHL, only some of his $2.75 million contract will be taken off of the book.

McGinn played against the Predators and even snapped his 26 game scoreless drought with an assist.

If the Penguins are looking to trade one or both of McGinn and Friedman, they can be dealt and sent directly to the AHL with their new team.

With the NHL trade deadline two days away, this move opens up all kinds of opportunities for the Penguins to explore.

Everyone will now wait on official word from the Penguins.
