Oilers salvage road trip thanks to Zach Hyman’s overtime winner against Jets
? James Carey Lauder-USA TODAY Sports

In a battle of two teams who needed a win, the Edmonton Oilers came out on top.

The Oilers dropped back-to-back games this weekend, starting with an ugly loss in the spotlight against the Toronto Maple Leafs which was followed up by a blown lead in Ottawa against the lowly Senators.

The Winnipeg Jets returned home after a five-game road trip that started off well and finished poorly. They picked up wins over the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers but then lost to the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, and Washington Capitals, all teams below them in the standings.

After a scoreless first frame, Mason Appleton opened the scoring for Winnipeg early in the second frame. Leon Draisaitl and Connor Brown scored goals a couple of minutes apart later in the second to give Edmonton the lead, and then Ryan Nugent-Hopkins put the Oilers up 3-1 with a power play goal in the third.

Looking to avoid their fifth consecutive loss, the Jets battled back in the middle of the frame. Defenceman Brenden Dillon scored to make the score 3-2 and then, one minute later, Sean Monahan knotted the score with his 22nd goal of the season.

In the final couple minutes of the game, the Jets had a prime opportunity to complete the comeback as Nugent-Hopkins was called for a two-minute high-sticking penalty. The Oilers killed off the penalty and then Zach Hyman buried his 51st goal of the season to give Edmonton the win in overtime.

What they said…

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch on facing a motivated team in Winnipeg…

“Coming into this building, we knew they were going to be ready. They had a road trip where they’d lost three in a row, coming back home, and a very good hockey team. We were prepared for a hard test, and I believe we got a pretty hard test.”

“I didn’t like our first five to seven minutes of the game and probably a three-minute stretch there in the third period where they got the two goals. Other than that, I thought our team played really well and (was) doing a lot of little things. We had 40-plus shots on net, got a power-play goal and the penalty kill was really solid. So, a lot of things to be happy about.”

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on the Oilers stopping Winnipeg’s momentum…

“This game is a game of momentum. (When) the momentum swung in their way, I thought we did a good job of settling it down and staying composed on the bench and just go back to doing what we do, and we came up with a win.”

Darnell Nurse on facing a tight, physical game against a tough team on the road…

“It was a hard game from start to finish, and they’re a team that’s up there in the standings. They’ve won a lot of games, especially here on home ice, so it was a good win for us.

It was one of those games. A pretty physical game. We go through a lot of regular-season games where there’s not a ton of physicality, and then all of a sudden tonight, there was quite a lot.”

Connor Brown on Zach Hyman’s overtime winner and 51st goal of the season…

“He’s a big-time player for us and he shows up time and time again in big moments, and we’re lucky to have him.”

“We don’t think we’re done. We’ve got a job to do in this regular season and it’s one game at a time, and I really liked our process in the game tonight.”

Winnipeg head coach Rick Bowness on his team’s inconsistent play…

“The first period shows you how good we can be and then the second period just shows you how bad we are when we get away from the way we’re supposed to play. Yeah, we got it back in the third, so it was kind of like that. That’s how I assess it then. The first was great. The second was terrible. And the third was even.”
